One of the great little-known walks - a 4 day hiking vacation through Ribblesdale, Dentdale and Mallerstang in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Our basic route runs from the market town of Settle - situated at the start of this iconic railway - to the delightful small town of Kirkby Stephen, which is about half way to Carlisle.
This is a linear walk with a difference because each day ends at a station on the line and you catch a train back to Settle. One major advantage of this is that you're not packing up and moving on every day, so you have all the advantages of a linear walk, with none of the hassle! Each morning, of course, you take the train to where you left off the previous afternoon.
For 40 miles or so the route follows (more or less) the course of the Settle - Carlisle railway, one of the Victorian Britain's greatest engineering triumphs. The first two days are spent in Ribblesdale, reaching the spectacular Ribblehead Viaduct. From there a higher-level walk takes us over Blea Moor to upper Dentdale and the highest main line railway station in England. The final day runs along the valley of Mallerstang and, at 14 miles, is the longest day of the walk, and the final return train journey from Kirkby Stephen back to Settle is a joy, as you retrace your steps - albeit rather more quickly!
