The Dales Way - a Knobbly Stick self-guided walking holiday

Cam High Road

The Dales Way is an ideal introduction to walking a long distance trail - it's not too long, it's not too difficult and the scenery on the way is just grand. It's also an ideal introduction to the north of England, with some fine examples of unspoiled villages, places to spot wildlife and some excellent historical buildings.

The Dales Way runs for about 80 miles from Ilkley, in the Yorkshire Dales, to Bowness on Windermere in the English Lake District, right through some of England's finest and most interesting scenery. On the way, you will pass through superb towns and villages like Grassington, Kettlewell and Sedbergh, with the larger town of Kendal within easy reach towards the end of the walk.

We like to think of the Dales Way as a comfortable challenge, and a chance to experience some wonderful walking country, mostly along valley and riverbank, on paths or quiet roads. There are only a couple of excursions onto higher ground, where you cross from one valley to another. Most of the navigation is fairly straightforward, and there are only one or two places where you would really feel to be away in the wilds. The whole route is detailed in the self-guided Dales Way page of our brochure, so have a look if you want to know more.

We recommend taking 6 or, maybe better, 7 days to do the journey, so that you can really appreciate the sights and sounds as you go along. This means 7 or 8 nights' accommodation and we strongly suggest you should tackle the route between April and October, when there is more daylight, and less chance of wind and rain.

As on our other self-guided walking holidays, your Dales Way accommodation is on a B&B basis in guest house, farm or pub. You will receive our self-guided walking holiday pack of route map, official guide book and our own personally researched and written route notes. Your holiday price also includes baggage transfer and a list of useful information such as public transport timetables and emergency services.
