The Cumbria Way makes a determined 70 mile course from the south coast of the county of Cumbria at Ulverston to the county's only city at Carlisle almost on the Scottish border. For most of its length, the Way passes through the English Lake District, and generally uses valleys rather than the high tops. There is one mountain pass to cross (Stake Pass) about half way along the route, but it is views of hills, rather than from them, that you will enjoy on this splendid journey. Picturesque villages and towns such as Coniston, Keswick and Caldbeck are all visited and two of Lakeland's best known valleys - Langdale and Borrowdale - will become very familiar to you as the walk progresses.
The Cumbria Way is a grand introduction to Cumbria and the Lake District - quiet, but not deserted, and in hill country for most of the way without any great lung-bursting ascents (well, OK, there's Stake Pass!). If you're a first-time long distance walker, or a first time visitor to the Lake District, this could be the ideal walk for you. Try it with one of the kids - a better present than a video game. Or come with your wife / husband / partner - more romantic than a dozen red roses or an electric drill!
We recommend that you spend a week doing the walk, which gives you some spare time for sight seeing, having a rest, or visiting some of the fell-tops (or Wainwrights as they are known locally) near the line of the route. Just let us know which of these you'd like us to plan into your route before you start.
One of the great hiking vacations!
