The Settle to Carlisle Railway is one of the great railway journeys of the world. If, of course, you only do it by train, you only get fleeting glimpses of the scenery. If you do it on foot, of course, you see it all - and then you get a train ride back - included in the price of your holiday!
A Knobbly Stick exclusive!
A walk to do before you die, as all the colour supplements would say!
Do we do the whole the route of the Settle to Carlisle Railway?
Well, no, actually, our walk runs from Settle to Kirkby Stephen, about half way along the line, but we can do the other half of the walk next year.

So, what makes it so good?
It's unspoiled walking all the way, nearly always within sight of the railway line, but picking up many interesting (and unexpected features) on the way. The terrain is varied, and we pass by some of the great monuments to the late industrial revolution in the form of bridges, tunnels and viaducts, not to mention other historical remains such as a castle where King Arthur is reputed to have lived!
Is it a strenuous route?
It's not too hard - we do about 40 miles in 4 days' walking, with a few up and downs. It should be well within the compass of the mythical average walker.
