Hill walking the easy way

Morecambe Bay: The only one of our English holidays with a bit of coastline! Not your bucket and spade seaside though, but salt marsh and a few low cliffs. A haven for seabirds and a joy for seabird watchers.

Tarn and Boat House
Tarn and boathouse (Geoff Thiel)

Grange: a Victorian resort built with the coming of the railway and now a quiet and pleasant small town at the southern edge of Lakeland.

Hampsfell: a rolling limestone upland that springs almost directly from the grounds of our hotel. Its summit is reached after a fairly leisurely woodland stroll and is the proud possessor of a splendid "folly" which offers shelter in poor weather and a marvellous viewpoint when the sun shines - which it does quite often in Grange. There are other low tops as well, such as Whitbarrow and Gummers How and Arnside Knott, each one offering rewards out of all proportion to the effort involved in reaching them. The coastal walk around Arnside is something different, and we may well visit the village of Cartmel, home of the celebrated sticky toffee pudding!

Wainwright Count: a nice, fat, resounding zero. (See any of our other Lakes guided holiday destinations if this comment has baffled you.)

Hotel: The Netherwood Hotel. A truly impressive building, with oak panelling, log fires when it's cold, a swimming pool and a beauty therapy facility. Nearly all the bedrooms have shower and bath, and the excellent meals can be enjoyed in the splendid restaurant overlooking Morecambe Bay
Dates: Sunday 6th April to Thursday 10th April - post-hibernation special
Sunday 7th December to Thursday 11th December - pre-Christmas stress-buster
Price: All inclusive for 4 hotel nights (dinner, bed and breakfast) and 3 days guided walking: £519 per person
