Bowfell and Crinkle Crags
Bowfell and Crinkle Crags from loughrigg

Ambleside, Langdale, Coniston & Grasmere: the very names are an inspiration to walkers everywhere, and some of the locations we can visit on this holiday are known the world over.

Great Langdale - possibly the most famous valley in the Lakes is just down the road, as is Grasmere with its connections with William Wordsworth, who profoundly changed our way of thinking about wild places with his poetry and his classic "Guide to the Lakes." Coniston, a former mining village, but now a bustling tourist resort, lies beneath a fine group of hills just made to be walked, and also has its ultimately tragic associations with Donald Campbell of Bluebird fame.

Ambleside: our base for this holiday is one of the "Gateways" to the Lake District, and is ideally placed for many of the area's best-loved walks.

Fairfield: rising 2,860 ft almost directly from the village streets, the famous Fairfield Horseshoe makes a wonderfully satisfying circular walk along a broad, mostly grassy, ridge, and we can spend time on the equally popular Langdale Pikes, Old Man of Coniston or Bowfell. For lovers of more gentle walking, the area has some of the best there is - Tarn Hows, Little Langdale and Loughrigg for example.

Wainwright Count: for those of you with Wainwrights to knock off, there are 39 of them we can do from Glenridding - but not all on the same holiday, of course! (For those not in the know, a Wainwright is one of the 214 Lake District hills described by A Wainwright in his classic guide books compiled in the 1950's and 60's. "Doing the Wainwrights" has become a popular pastime and has even had its own BBC TV programme, presented by Julia Bradbury. Most of our walkers are not enthusiastic tickers-off of summits but, then again, once you get there...)
